Hi! How awesome that you've chosen London, England for your Staycay tour! London is a magnificent city just filled with history and fun! We hope you love your staycation here!
London was establised nearly two thousand years ago and is filled with fascinating sites both old and new -- many of which you'll get to enjoy on your staycay. We hope you have a fun time with the sightseeing!
Your itinerary for this Staycay Tour includes:
Such a full staycay! There's more than 3-1/2 hours of London here for you to enjoy, or you can skip through in just a few minutes if you're in a hurry -- that's what staycays are all about! (If you'd like to stick to around a half-hour of staycationing, just enjoy the tour stops that have our tour guide icon on them -- he'll help you make the most of your time.)
And now, on with your Staycay Tour! To start your tour and move through your tour stops, just click on the > pointer up on the right (and swiping works too if you're on a mobile device). Enjoy!
Our flight into London arrives at Heathrow airport -- and wow, what a great view we have out the window today! Keep an eye out at about the 1-minute mark, you'll see the River Thames (which is pronounced "tems") and key sights like the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, London Bridge, and more! At about the 1:30 mark, the London Eye comes into view (a giant, enclosed ferris-wheel type attraction) and Big Ben too. Enjoy your landing!
While Heathrow Airport is a main airport for London, it's a ways outside the city -- about a 20 minute express train ride in. Before we give you the opportunity to experience that train trip, if you'd like to listen to a local London radio station while we're on the train or any other part of this staycay (assuming your device supports it), just click the link below to access the BBC's radio stations.
In addition to there being many private radio stations in Great Britain, the BBC, England's national media service, offers a great selection of radio stations too, and those are the stations here to choose from. They've got everything from pop to classical to dance/club (one recommendation is to pick BBC 5 talk radio to hear what the Brits are talking about these days). Pick whatever you're in the mood for and then pop back here to continue your Staycay Tour!
Here's the express train we were telling you about -- the Heathrow Express! This train will take us right into Paddington Station (yep, the same Padding Station that Padding Bear is named after). This express trip is a really neat way to see the English countryside on our way into the city.
No trip to London feels quite complete without experiencing the London Underground -- aka "The Tube" -- London's world-famous subway system and the world's first underground passenger railway! Our trip takes us from here at Paddington to Victoria Station where we'll transfer to one more quick Tube trip to get us close to our hotel. (Because that's what subway travel is all about, and we're here to give you an authentic staycation experience!)
We're joined here by a great guide who'll give us perfect tips about how to get where we're going and info about using the Tube along the way.
The Tube is fun, right? Now we're going to pop back down into the station and go quickly from here to the Green Park station where we'll check in at our hotel.
And here we are at your hotel! (Only the best for our Staycay Tours guests!)
We have you at the Ritz this trip. Before you see the room, I thought you might enjoy getting a sense of what makes the Ritz, the Ritz and have a look around the place.
Now, have a look around your room -- or, rather, your suite -- the Royal Suite. Hope it's enough space for you -- we didn't know how much virtual luggage or how big of an entourage you would bring.
(After this, we'll head on over to Buckingham Palace.)
Welcome to Buckingham Palace! The palace is home of the Queen of England when she's in London and Her Majesty's administrative HQ as well.
Here is an amazing peek inside the palace for you. And this video is a 360-degree tour which means you can spin the view around as you're watching the video -- just click or tap on the video while it's playing or paused and drag your mouse or finger around to look left, right, up, or down to take in the whole view -- super cool, and super beautiful!
If you'd like to learn more about Buckingham Palace -- take more virtual tours, see photos, read articles, etc. -- just click on the link below. It'll take to you the royal family's website where you can find a ton of information about the palace which they've made available for the public to enjoy.
We're now a little over a mile from Buckingham Palace and find ourselves on the other side of the River Thames at the London Eye. This thing is so cool and a ride in it gives you a view like none other of London.
It was built in 1999 and at the time was called the Millennium Wheel. It stands 443 feet high (that's 135 meters if you do the metric measurements thing) and turns so slowly and gracefully that they generally don't even need to stop it for people to board and leave their cabin. Check that out as you board -- and enjoy the view!!
Wasn't that view from the Eye cool?? Let's see at street-level now a bit of the view we enjoyed from above. We're going to take a walk from the London Eye to our next tour stop: Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament (formally known as the Palace of Westminster).
We'll be walking along the River Thames to get there -- as we do, you'll be able to see our destination to the right on the other side of the river. (On our left most of the way will be the SEA LIFE Centre London Aquarium.) Once we're across the bridge and looking up at the clock tower -- about the 17 minute, 15 seconds mark -- you can stop the video and click on to the next tour stop: a more detailed look at Big Ben, Parliament, and Wesminster Abbey.
Here we are at Big Ben, and there's a suprise for you: you get to go inside the clock tower -- something most people never get to see! Enjoy this very rare view of the inner workings of this world-famous landmark!
Now let's take a quick peek inside Westminster Palace. This is where the House of Lords and the House of Commons meet -- they're two main parts of the British government -- and fun fact: technically, even though it's a key location for government offices, the palace is considered one of the royal residences and is owned by the monarch.
So, let's take a look inside. And bonus: this is a 360-degree virtual tour, so you can spin the view around as you're watching the video -- just click or tap on the video while it's playing or paused and drag your mouse or finger around to look left, right, up, or down to take in the whole view!
Now, just across the way from the Palace of Westminster is Westminster Abbey. And this place has some history!
Founded by Benedictine monks in the year 960, monarchs have been conornated here since the year 1066! The church building as you'll see it today was begun in the year 1245 by King Henry III, and once you see it, you'll understand why its history and beauty have made it a World Heritage Site.
Here's the beloved travel guru Rick Steves with a quick look through the church.
Welcome to the next stop on your Staycay Tour: the Tower of London! It has been here on the banks of the River Thames for the last thousand years and for the last 500 of those, it has been guarded by the Yeoman Warders (aka "beefeaters" -- yep, like the gin). Today's Yeoman Warders are all drawn from the armed forces, and one of these very esteemed members of the Queen's Guard is going to be your tour guide to show you around this amazing place. Enjoy!
Want to get a more thorough look around the Tower of London grounds? Well here it is -- a 20-minute walk around the grounds. Note that the next (and final) piece of your tour after this one is a super-robust 1+ hour walk around inside the Tower of London buildings.
If you have the time (and don't mind a fair share of advertisements), here's really comprehensive 1+ hour walk-through of the buildings of the Tower of London.
Unfortunately, one of the few public buildings in which you're not allowed to record video is the one where the Crown Jewels are displayed, but this walk-through covers pretty much everything else.
Wow, do we have a treat for you for your flight out on your Staycay Tour: a veiw from the pilots' seats as you depart Heathrow Airport! Super cool. So as you fly away from your London staycay, you'll be able to say "Cheerio, England" with a view of the English countryside as you disappear above the clouds.
We really hope you've enjoyed your Staycay Tour! And we hope you'll enjoy another one soon and consider iniviting a friend along on your next one -- because Staycay Tours can be enjoyed together from the comfort of your own homes!
Wherever your day takes you, be well and safe travels!
